No one, however, has warned us that very hot drinks can also be harmful, and in a far more serious way. According to research recently published in theInternational Journal of Cancer, drinking tea or other liquids with a temperature above 60°C (140°F) can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer: by as much as 90 percent, from 2 cups and up.
