Coffee and Caffeine

What do we know about coffee, one of the most prevalent beverages in our daily diet? Do we know the positive effects on our body? And to what extent can we drink it without taking unnecessary risks to our bodies?

Coffee is not harmful when consumed at levels of 200 mg at a time or 400 mg per day. One espresso contains 50 to 120 mg of caffeine, indeed science has shown positive effects on the nervous system. In fact, caffeine increases alertness and general well-being, facilitates concentration and improves mood.

Moderate coffee consumption has been associated with prevention of cognitive decline and reduced risk of developing stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Also important are metabolic activities of coffee, which contains polyphenols with high antioxidant power. These improve postprandial hyperglycemia and vascular endothelial function, an extremely useful action in preventing cardiometabolic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. Regular consumption of coffee helps to maintain body weight, after a slimming diet, identical positive activity would perform it in the slimming phase by keeping muscle metabolism at optimal levels. It should be known that caffeine can disrupt sleep, but only in sensitive individuals and if consumed beyond recommended limits and before sleep. Caffeine does not appear to cause addiction, although a minority of people experience withdrawal symptoms.

In conclusion, coffee can be part of a healthy and balanced diet, even in the elderly unless specifically contraindicated and as long as it is drunk only in the early part of the day and not after 2 p.m., so as not to disturb sleep.

ADOLESCENTS: excessive caffeine consumption for more than half of them

Excessively exhausting life rhythms, little time devoted to sleep and rest, study and work:

these are some of the factors that have led to an increase in caffeine consumption in adolescence, to reach of harmful levels for nearly half of adolescents. The effects of coffee and – consequently – of the caffeine contained in it, are very incisive on our body. This substance, in fact, stimulates cardiac and nerve function, decreases appetite and induces the slimming, increasing the amount of calories burned by the body.

However, caffeine, like many other substances, can also be hazardous to our bodies if taken In large quantities. When it is excessive, in fact, the stimulatory action of the gastric system can cause damage to the digestive system, while the stimulatory action of the cardiac and nervous systems can prove dangerous in individuals suffering from insomnia, hot flashes and hypertension. Therefore, for the preservation of our well-being, it is a good idea not to overindulge in caffeine intake.

The study of adolescents

For the reasons just listed, the
University
of Foggia carried out a study published in the journal scientific Acta Pediatrica, on about 1,200 adolescents to ascertain what their actual coffee consumption is. Students from four schools in the Foggia area were given an anonymous questionnaire, and the results showed that nearly half of the subjects surveyed, ranging from 12 to 19 years of age, make excessive caffeine consumption, often beyond the recommended limits. 76 percent of the boys admitted to
take
caffeine on a daily basis, with coffee predominating, followed by from soft drinks (34.3%) and energy drinks (2.3%).

According to the study, adolescents consume on average an amount of caffeine of 125.2 milligrams, even reaching peaks of 126.3 milligrams in girls. These data show. that 46% of those tested exceeded the caffeine intake recommended by theU.S. Academy of Pediatricians (AAP), identified as 100 milligrams. Among the factors contributing to increased caffeine intake, increased nervousness and agitation typical of adolescence play a crucial role.

Angelo Campanozzi, study coordinator, explains: “These results could be used to set up an awareness campaign directed at reducing its consumption among adolescents. Since it is durrently during childhood and adolescence that eating habits develop, early education on limited coffee consumption is critical to reduce possible misbehavior in adulthood.”

Does caffeine increase anxiety or not?

Caffeine is a stimulant substance and, as such, in addition to keeping you more alert, improving concentration and physical and intellectual performance, it can promote increased anxiety in people who suffer from or are predisposed to it. But there is no need to despair, because it is also a matter of dosage, and 1-2 cups of coffee a day do not contain enough caffeine to be harmful, unless there is a pronounced individual sensitivity to its action. On the other hand, it is good to know that caffeine is not only contained in coffee, but also in other beverages, dietary supplements and some medications. A few pointers from the experts to avoid problems.
