Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone, normally produced by the pituitary gland, whose function is to stimulate milk production in pregnant women and to prevent further pregnancy during the early stages of lactation;hyperprolactinemia is that condition characterized by blood values of prolactin above normal.
This condition is often accompanied by anovulatory and menstrual cycle disorders (in women) and loss of libido and potency (in men).
